Where did the idea for the game Hangman first originate?

I really enjoy playing Hangman sometimes, even if it does seem a bit unfair (really, really long words). But who came up with the idea that if you do not manage to guess the letters of a word, you would be hanged?

It seems a bit morbid now that I think about it xD
